SWAMI PURNANAND JI MAHARAJ
on the occasion of World peace Summit 2000 in USA}
Our soul is potentially divine. Knowledge, existence and bliss are inherent qualities of our nature. To be over blissful, calm and quit are the summon bonoum of our soul for which we are striving all the time. Physical happiness, peace and safety have a limited significance. The idea of externel happiness and peace is possible only on spritually ground. All religious teachers and scriptures preach for realising the same.
We see that this divine cheerfulness and peace have been manifested on those great souls who were jenerally materially poor. Surprisingly, the country, society and a persion who are much more meterially rich & prosperous have no less worries, miseries and suffering than those who are economicallly poor. Evils like agony violence, deceitfulness are found rather more among the people who materially sound. Then how can we be assured that the ma n or the country having much economic and material resources can have externel peace and happiness.
Once jesus blessed a blind man and he got his vision. The man was really very much obliged to the Master. after many years jesus happened to pass through that way and he desired to meet that man. it was revealed that after getting his eyes the man had become terribly corrupt. Ultimately he was found in a brothel. That man could not even recognise Jesus. Jesus said,'what are you doing ? Were you given eyes for this ?' He said, 'Lord, yoi gave me eyes but not the sense of discrimination.'
In fact, peace and happiness have not so much to do with poverty and outer invironment. A man is less unhappy because he is poor. He is more unhappy because someone is richer than him. What is the solution of such narrow-mindness. Only a spritually conscious man knows, he should be contented with what he has. If one becomes iess selfish and feels everybody as his own brother, feels more happy with other happines then he becomes ever cheerful. The fundamental belief of all religions is that the entire horizon is the priphery of our country. We all are children of the one God.
The Bhagawad Geeta proclaims that the man who has not control over his mind and senses can never have balenced intelligence. His heart will always be anguished and then and then how can one think of peace and tranquillity.
For peace and security one should have control over his mind and senses. By psychic practoce and vairagya, this command can be achieved.
So far as the question of poverty and ecology is concerned, statesmsn and government can play an importent role in this case. Of course, much efforts are being made from thier parts but no very good results are seen to be achieved. A man without the sense of discriminination gets the means of luxuries and then turns to violence and corruption. In this context, our government is spending alot of money to improve the situation but there is hardly any improvement. Here a man gets and money and starts drinking wine, buying firearms, starts making arson and pillaging.
Therefore, the solution lies in the parable of Jesus and the blindman. Our religious leaders will give a blindman the discrimination and the government may give him the eyes.
My Gurudev Swami param used to tell that the politics without religion is like a widow and the religion without the help of government is like a widower. In my opinion, the solition lies in mutual understanding between religion and the government which can establish peace and harmony overall. The government will have to provide education, good and other accomodations and the religion should bring home to the message the ideas of contentment, tolerence, liberality, nonviolence, sympathy to others and universal and freindship. Difference arise because of selfishness and arrogance. For having control over mind and senses one should perform religious desciplines. He has nothing to do with material gains.
Of course, every man in the world is certainly related to any religious organisation or belongs to a religion. There are innumerable religions, sests faiths in practise all over the world. Fundamentally all of them envisage peace and happiness for what they lead and preach their followers. Then why such quarrels and illwill among one-another ? Why so-called religious people become so aggresive, intolerant, incompassionate for others ? Definitely there is some misunderstandings regarding the concepts and theme of our religious beliefs. Certainly there is a sag. If the leaders of all religions assemble on one platform, do some hard thinking over this , then surely some positive solution can be obtained.
First we will have to remind the rergime its failures and will have to get their co-operation. Journals, magajines, books, other developed media of communication should be harnessed in bringing home to man ther fundamental thinking of religions. On the basis of fundamental, common theoligies of all religions, on universal code of conduct or a world religious constitution will have to be framed to direct or guide the world's entire generation.
Religious leaders should move around and let people know their sacrosanct belief. At the same time they should stop any adverse talking for other religions. By their pious contact they should train up people in sadhanas, religious practices and should theach the of renunciation. This renunciation means getting rid of one's selfish personal ego. The government should provide the religious teachers nessesary resources. Ethics and religiocity should be made an important part of our education, which will become later on the life-stile of the people. Religious teachers should arouse self-conciousness in a man and make him aware of his inherent vast divine power by having which one remains peaceful, balanced and happy even in times of great odds, difficulties and adversities.
What has been said above is not mere a theory but the well-known truth of history. Whenever the administration was under the supervision of religiously conscious greatman, the concept of power, glory, unenemity, pasce and pleasure were translated into reality. Of course, today great religiously conscious greatman, the concept of power, glory, unenemity, peace and pleasure were translated into reality. Of course, today great religious conference are being organised where Shanti mantras are ever being chanted all the time. On the other hand political leaders also shout slogans to eliminate poverty, to raise the standards of people, to improve ecology but still the problem remain unturned. Unhappiness, dissatisfaction, rivalary, jealously, feas from others, terror of war and insecurity is widespread even now. In what moment the bell of disaster, ruin will ring, nobody knows.
Television, Cinema, magazines and other means of communications are exploiting people for show, lixurie, fashion and are training up in many evil ways. Man's mind are being vitiated and poisoned. The measure of media provoke theft, robbery, rape violence, illicit corruption. Therefore religious leaders should put pressure on the govrnment to check it and to use the means of communications to spread good ideals of ethics, culor belongs to a religion. My feeling is that unless religious leaders get organised leaving their illfeelings for others and thenafter influence the government to obtain its co-operation, no favourable result is likely to be achieved. The administration should provide means of livelyhood and we religious teachers should train up people in compassion, tolerence and universal friendship by controlling their mind and senses. the universel peace and harmony can only be established when the religion and the government join hands, realise the importance of each other. Animosity or jealously can be won over by friendship and goodwill. And for this no finiancial resources is needed. Well that is the beautiful flowers that sprouts in our pious spritual mind and the flower spreads its fragrance to entire mankind by the blessings of the Divine.
